Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons provide diagnosis and treatment of oral conditions, including diseases such as oral cancer, at our Montreal clinic.
The Importance of Oral Screenings
Growths or conditions of the mouth need immediate attention and treatment, since symptoms such as lesions can lead to more serious problems down the road.
Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons can help examine and diagnose both malignant and benign oral conditions.
When it comes to successfully treating oral disease, early detection is key. Regular screenings can help spot any abnormalities or changes before symptoms appear.
Get to know how your mouth looks and feels - examine it on a monthly basis for any abnormalities. Oral conditions and cancer can first appear as new or suspicious lumps, bumps, sores or blisters, so do not ignore these.
In addition, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, refraining from tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption and avoiding excessive sun exposure to your lips can reduce your risk of getting oral cancer.
Having an excellent at-home oral hygiene routine and eating a healthy, nutritious diet containing fruits and vegetables can also help prevent these and other oral conditions.
Schedule a consultation appointment with our oral and maxillofacial surgeons as soon as possible if you notice any growths, changes or symptoms in your mouth, face or neck. We will perform a thorough examination and treat the condition if required.
Symptoms of Oral Abnormalities
A special type of skin (mucosa) is a smooth, pink lining on the inside of the mouth. Any changes in appearance of this tissue could be a warning sign for a pathological process, including these:
- Reddish or white patches
- A lump or thickening inside of the mouth
- A sore that does not heal and bleeds easily
- A longstanding sore throat or hoarseness
These changes can be detected and sometimes seen on the palate, cheeks, lips, tongue, neck, facial skin, or gum tissue surrounding the teeth. Pain may or may not occur if a pathological process is developing.
